Hide Behind The Clouds

Hide Behind the Clouds is a song that was written and recorded in collaboration with fellow musician and producer Dan Holbourne. Dan came to us with a demo of some of the instrumentation to the song, asking if we could help him figure out what this song needed.

All of us instantly fell in love with the unique melancholic atmosphere he had captured in that initial draft. It gave us a good impression of the mood we were after, and it inspired us to get to it.

Using the demo as our starting point, we began coming up with ideas that complemented the elements that were already present. It didn’t take long for the song to grow and develop a character of its own. At this point, Yen wrote the majority of the lyrics, capturing the implicit feeling of the song with words. Suddenly, the meaning of the song fell right into place.

The lyrics he came up with echoed a sentiment of feeling lost—finding yourself in an unfamiliar place, uncertain of how you ended up there, and unsure of how to leave. Disoriented and unable to get your bearings, you turn to the sky as a place of unchanging stability and recognition.

The imagery of clouds symbolizing a place of refuge, where one might retreat to when life becomes overwhelming or confusing, became central to the song. "Hiding behind the clouds" is about allowing yourself to pause and reflect. There’s something paradoxical about how the song captures this duality of confiding in your doubts and finding comfort in uncertainty.

While the fear of being lost might seem like an emotion to avoid, there’s a sense of peace that can be found in its embrace. A refound clarity emerges when opening yourself up to the unknown and the unexpected. These seemingly negative emotions have the potential to reconnect us with ourselves.
